UNDP Report shows that the flags raised by AKNL were justified
On 23 March 2019, Aret Kokin Nu Laplaz (AKNL) contacted the UNDP Social and Environmental Compliance Unit (SECU) asserting that, at the pace at which the Mauritian government is allowing the development permits to be issued for hotel and residential construction projects along the country’s coast, UNDP’s project known as “Mainstreaming Biodiversity into the Management of Coastal Zone in the Republic of Mauritius”, fails to protect Environmental Sensitive Areas. (See our initial post about this).
After an 18-month investigation carried-out by UNDP’s Social and Environmental Compliance Unit (SECU), at internal level, namely its local office and after consultations with government bodies and other NGO’s, the UNDP made its report public in November 2020.
In a nutshell, the report acknowledges that the way the project is being monitored, it is not fully in line with several of UNDP’s Social and Environmental Standards (SES).
